“AI is accelerating fast and now is the time for organisations to learn, experiment and innovate, to understand both the potential benefits to people, job, and business outcomes, but also to understand the risks.”

Peter Cheese, Chief Executive, CIPD

The CIPD has launched a guide on artificial intelligence and how it’s being used in HR. The guide, Getting your organisation ready for AI use, stresses the importance of people professionals creating clear policies surrounding the use of AI tools such as ChatGPT and Google Bard.

As AI is accelerating in the areas and ways it’s being used all over the world, it’s imperative that people professionals and organisations gain momentum in how to best harness the benefits and mitigate the risks of such tools.

The CIPD recommends that people professionals:

  1. Set guidance based on principles: establish guidelines for how you understand and approach AI within your organisation and communicate these clearly to all staff. Guidelines should be based on ethical and responsible principles to ensure human-centred, transparent and accountable use of AI, but also to manage possible risks around data privacy and security.
  2. Engage and develop your people: commit to engaging your people and helping them develop by encouraging experimentation and trials with AI and fostering a culture of shared learning across teams. This will help increase awareness, collaboratively drive benefits, and address any concerns that arise.
  3. Think strategically: understand how AI may impact your business, your operating model, and your competitive positioning. Be curious, learn from others, and aim to keep abreast of AI developments, recognising risks of disruption and new competitive threats, as well as looking for potential positive outcomes for your business today and in the long term.

Find out how AI is being used by HR professionals in ways ranging from hiring processes to eliminating mundane tasks that allow for better time management.
